Vinnies marks 125 years serving the community
The St Vincent de Paul Society is celebrating 125 years of service in News South Wales and the ACT today.
Hundreds of volunteers will take part in a special service at St Patrick's in Sydney's Rocks district to mark the occasion.
The society's operations manager John Picot says its charity work is needed now more than ever.
"Certainly last year we assisted over half-a-million people across the state and the ACT, so it doesn't appear as though people in need are going to go away," he said.
Mr Picot says today celebrates the beginning of the modern day "Vinnies".
"Since that first conference began, the society has gone on to grow to an organisation of over 20,000 volunteers in New South Wales and the ACT and over that time we've assisted many hundreds of thousands of people across the state," he said. [glow=red,2,300] WE NEED MORE PEOPLE LIKE THEM[/glow]
