Ever since hearing Kevin Andrews attacking Kim Beazley on 3AW yesterday
evening (during the Derryn Hinch drive program), my still developing
understanding of the subject of communication has really been put to
the test.
As two 3AW callers pointed out to Neil Mitchell this morning, "what"
Kim Beazley has said, linking the Nothern Tasmianian mining tradegy to
the ongoing debate about Industrial Relations, may have been more
appropriate at a later time, but they are still points that must be
raised.
Neil Mitchell's decision to talk over one caller and insist that "he
doesn't want to debate the issue" lacks respect for two things:
* having two sides to a debate
* failure to recognise that by refusing to debate the issue, no
scrutiny can then be provided to Neil Mitchell's own attempts to "link
issues" - namely his opinion of Kim Beazley with the very selective
Newspoll published today in The Australia, which has quite deliberately
published Kim Beazley's falling ratings in a poll "separate" to Labor's
more competitive overall polling.
Get it? Get the same "headlines" with only half the effort. Jolly
good work Ed
Trust me, if given the chance, the political Right would rather the
poll figures be the opposite of what they are. They would rather have
a more popular Labor leader and weak "overall" poll results for Labor
than the polls we are getting now.
What "matters" to them is that "culture wars" out-flank "class
divides". It's the "only means"
of reaching the desired end of "tax cuts for those that least need
them"
Yep, it's all in aid of this "shallow culture war" that's meant to
substitute "real socioeconomic debate" which I have every intention of
promoting from now on.
By demonstrating their lack of respect for debate, this Right-wing bias
is getting very desperate to deny anything that looks remotely like a
"class division"
The paradox is that, in their desperate bid, they actually reveal their
own class.
You can't fool all of the people, all of the time.
Please, a bit more journalism, Mr. Mitchell. "Telling it like it is"
may not always be appropriate, but it is still far worse to only want
to approve callers who agree with you.

Hi
If you'd prefer left wing talkback, you know that you have SO many ABC
stations to choose from. 3AW and indeed the majority of Southern Cross
talk presenters are simply "restoring the balance".
My personal opinion about Kim Beazley, while it is irrelevant, was that
his comment was not only in poor taste, but extremely out of character.
He usually has more compassion than that.
Cheers

What hypocryts you liberals are!!!
When labour lays blame on liberal IR laws you attack them, but it is OK for
that liberal Mulder to also attack over the death of two on that rail
accident!!!
"Rock in Stereo"
\
\That is exactly why the Vic state liberals have only 44% on a two party
prefered basis, they will be again wiped out at Novembers election!
Even Beazleys popularity is higher than Doyles which is at 15% and falling.
Doyley and his mates are always negative and attack everything that Bracksy
does some of which is good compared to what was there before, they even want
to recycle Kennett, God help us!!!
"NOCOMMENT"
ABC is about the only media where truly left opinions are presented in
the country. But not in all subjects and not all the time. All other
media is either balanced (like SMH and the Age), manipulated (like the
Murdoch press), or just plain rightard like 2GB, 2UE etc.
So the net outcomefor the country is quite a rightwing bias.
BTW your knowledge of the ABC seem to come from Alan Jones. LOL.
Ördög
Hello Ordog
I agree with you. With the exception of "So the net outcome for the
country is quite a rightwing bias". The net outcome is *extremely* hard
to judge, but I guess, if you base it all on ratings of listeners &
readership of newspapers, you could come to that conclusion.
"BTW your knowledge of the ABC seem to come from Alan Jones"
My knowledge of the ABC comes from spending a lot of time listening to
RN (esp. "Australia Talks Back") and Metro ABC. Further, some partners
of my colleagues work for the ABC, in an off-air roles. They will
readily admit to a distinct, underlying bias, and they are "socialist
criminals" (to use Stan Zemanek's phrase) themselves! Alan Jones' show
is not networked to Brisbane & for the record I don't particularly
enjoy his work.
Thanks to all who took the bait...
Leigh
Oooh, Leigh I took it too!
You might like to reflect a little on the fact that the ABC, being beholden
only to the public purse (though governments of both persuasions too often
forget this) is obliged to monitor its output, especially during elections,
so that it is not seen as "biassed."
Strangely, there is no such restriction (of which I am aware) on on the
commercial media. But then, they who have the gold make the rules.
As an aside, and I have no proof of this - members of our local security
intelligence service visited 3CR recently because of what might have been
seditious comments having been put to air. Can't recall when, if ever, a
commecial radio station had such a visit. Free Speech is alive and well
(providing you whisper...)
Hello Oldtimer
I do appreciate that the ABC do monitor their output, but who verifies
the monitoring results? In other words, it is like Centrelink
monitoring their own performance and "customer" satisfaction... And
that's one hell of a laugh. The point is the monitoring doesn't
legitimize anything. What is does do is give the ABC a convenient
answer to every criticism that they are biased in this or that... "Oh,
we can't be, not according to..."
Anyway, both the non-profit & commercial media do a fine job, generally
speaking, & your best chance for balance, from the audience's
perspective, is to listen to a variety of sources... even those ones
where you totally cannot stand the presenter & his views. That is why I
struggle through watching Media Watch & struggle through listening to
Jim Ball, even though most of what both programmes contain irritates
me. That solves everything.
Cheers
