An Aboriginal political activist alleges that the electoral seat of Gwyder is being merged with Parkes to stop Aborigines electing one of their own to the Canberra parliament.
Michael Anderson, leader of the Euahlayi and Gumilaroi nations, argues that “Gwydir poses the greatest threat to the non-Aboriginal establishment” because white people are leaving it while the Aboriginal population is growing.
He cites most recent birth statistics for the whole Murray Darling Basin, which takes in the majority of the seat of Gwydir, indicating that one non-Aboriginal child is born annually compared to nine Aboriginal children.
