The G.I.O. has still failed to investigate the case of a gay boy bullied at work. He dropped out of the Higher School Certificate six months before the final exams when he was offered a permanent position servicing Macintosh computers for which he was qualified through completion of the Apple Technicians Course. At first all was well and he was told by the service department boss that he was the best technician they had ever had working there. But soon the bullying started and he was told he wasn't working fast enough, he was shouted at and threatened and shortly after taking out a loan for a second hand car he was told if he didn't work faster he'd be replaced by someone who did. This put him under terrible stress because the repayments were more than $200 per fortnight. He was shocked when the words 'Ciaran likes little boys' appeared at the top of some receipts. This disturbed him particularly as he had been assaulted when he was a boy. Evenually towards the end of December last year he broke down and became extremely depressed, staying in bed most of the day unable to wake up. He has had no treatment other than fairly useless visits to general practitioners. The G.I.O. should be arranging and paying for proper counselling but they are not.
A complaint to WorkCover resulted in the G.I.O. being ordered to investigate but the boy's family have not heard from them. They have paid 2 weeks' wages since January on orders from Workcover but no more.
The pay at the store was abysmal - he was being paid the same as a supermarket trolley collector even though he held the correct qualification for the job. The employer gets around this by saying they are employing the technicians as 'shop workers'. A complaint is being prepared by the boy's mother for the Industrial Commission. He has no union to fall back on because he was told when he started work that he was not allowed to join the union. He was only 17 and did not know any better even though he came from a family of miners and unionists. The G.I.O. 'investigator' has telephoned the five doctors who wrote work cover certificates and tried to bully them into withdrawing the certificates, telling lies about the boy's mother and stating she put pressure on him to make a claim. One doctor subsequently did withdraw his certificate.
Doctors have now written Workcover certificates stating he is fit for 2 days' work per week. So where is the assistance from the G.I.O. for him to return to work? Where is his rehabilitation officer? He is too frightened to approach his former boss about returning to work.
G.I.O. Insurance, you and your bullying caseworkers are disgusting and cruel.
We are lucky Ciaran is still alive and has not killed himself as another young worker did after being bullied in this same workplace.
I will continue to expose everything you do in this case. Thanks for the opportunity to expose workplace and insurance company bullying.
