Former governor-general, Labor Party leader and foreign minister Bill Hayden says China is heading for fragmentation and disorder.
Mr Hayden, who retired as governor-general in 1996, says it looks impossible for China to bridge the big gulf between urban wealth and rural squalor.
Mr Hayden told a conference at Griffith University that China's stability will be at stake. He says China suffers cronyism and extensive corruption, a dreadfully inefficient banking system and an over-heated economy.
Mr Hayden says China's economic and social unfairness will lead to inevitable political upheavals, and the country will have to face economic austerity as well as the rottenness in its system.
