This week is 'Drug Action Week'.
Drugs, in particular Cannabis and Alcohol are seriously affecting our young people a report has told. Cannabis in particular appears to be taking a stronghold in our communities. It is cheap, easy to get, and in large supply. The latest statistics have been released by the 'Australia National Council on Drugs' and state that almost 300.000 Australians use Cannabis every day and 1.8 million people have used the drug in the past year.
Detailed statistics showed 240.000 people age 30 - 39 used Cannabis in a 7 day period. At the same time 272.600 age 20 - 29, and 79.700 teenagers also used the drug. Cannabis is now only secondary to legal drugs e.g: Alcohol, and Tobacco. There is also a proportion of the population aged in the 50 - 60 age group who are still users of the drug.
The emphasis now appears to be on the education of the long term effects of Cannabis. It is proven to ruin relationships, inhibit lifestyle, and employment. With regular long term use Cannabis affects self-esteem and is known to create paranoia. The one time perception that Cannabis was not an addictive drug is now disputed by facts of the amount of people seeking help in getting off the drug.
The mere strength of Cannabis today is several times stronger than what it was say 25-30 years ago. Cultivation techniques are much more elaborate than they were. The fact is that Cannabis is now a dangerous and highly addictive drug. Even more so - it is illegal and obviously for some very good reasons. As parents and role-models for our future generations the message of the bad side of Cannabis needs to be carried and endorsed.
