Downer Says Hicks Is Unlikely To Suicide Unless His PR Agency Suggests It
The suicide of three Guantanmo Bay prisoners has been declared a “good PR exercise” by Colleen Grafy, the US Deputy Asssistant Secretary of State. She points to earlier PR attempts by the prisoners, including a series of press releases, a cocktail function and advertising on shopper dockets.
Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said that Australian David Hicks is not a suicide risk, unless he appoints a PR agency.
Sydney PR man Max Markson-Spencer, who runs the Debenhams agency, said he would not suggest a client tries suicide as a PR stunt except as a last resort – for example, for Big Brother evictees.
George Bush is said to be concerned about the role of PR in the war on terror. Abu Masab al-Zarqai was killed by US forces after it was revealed his agent had him signed-up for the Iraqi version of Dancing With Stars.
To counter any future PR moves George Bush has announced he has already sent 10,000 unarmed public relations and advertising people to high risk zones in the front line. The response has been favourable with fighting stopped for five hours yesterday while each side had lunch, followed by a cocktail reception and a gallery opening.
