Sydney MOORE PARK DEVELOPMENT LOOMS
Although the Sydney Cricket and Sport Ground Trust site is public
land bequeathed to the community by Governor Macquarie, the Government
is pursuing changes to legislation to permit commercial and
residential development.
The Government suspended normal Parliamentary business on Thursday to
permit the Minister for Sport and Recreation to introduce the Sydney
Cricket and Sports Ground Amendment Bill. I expect it to be rushed
through the Legislative Assembly on our next sitting week, beginning
Tuesday 6 June 2006.
The Bill removes restrictions limiting the land to "public
recreation" uses. This opens the door for commercial development on
areas such as the Gold Members' car park site and behind the hill. The
proposed legislation does not allow tourist or visitor (short term)
accommodation, but would permit residential and commercial development
on the current Gold Members' car park site.
According to the Minister, the Trust needs to upgrade public and
corporate facilities, including the Cricket Grounds Hill grandstand.
Any new development would be subject to approval by the Minister for
Sport and Recreation and the Minister for Planning.
This development threat again highlights lack of action on traffic
chaos in the precinct, the degradation of Moore Park from on-grass car
parking, and the urgent need for a light rail link to get thousands of
sports patrons in and out quickly.
