"A pair of black swans that had been peacefully sitting on the water were shot down almost simultaneously after they took off flying over a concealed maimai." I was watching them fly away, and for a while it seemed like they were going to get away but then bang bang and they just dropped out of the sky. How the f*** could you live with doing this?

Thats sick. Must have been target practice for the shooter. Sadly, it happens every day to Cardy.

To the duck protestors who are not vegans: How many of you know where meat and other animal products actually come from? Is your next move to stop birds eating insects? Humans are animals as well, so what if we positioned ourselves at the top of the food chain. Its thanks to animals that humans evolved into what they are today, The extra protein and fat gained from meat provided your distant ancestors with extra energy to increase the brain size as well as undergo other physical changes. But then again, you probably do not even believe in, let alone understand, the basics of evolution. Good Day you beard sporting bunch of ladies

Probably done by a Koori hunter taking some traditional food. Must have been a good shot though, hard to drop a swan, even harder to drop two. According to the old books it requires a powerful shotgun and heavy shot to stop them. Said to be good eating.

You claim that duck shooting is a sport. Most of the hunters like me actually eat the animals they have shot, even the pukeko is often eaten. Unlike the fox hunting which is sport. Duck shooting is a source of food, except for the few overpaid city fucks who come out to kill. There is a difference. You are dumping all hunters in one group and saying that they are all animal murderers. Well that would be like me saying all you protestors are a bunch of namby soft-cocks with no real jobs and to much money from daddy, so you can sit around debating how great your lives would be if you could just get a real life.oh wait..huh I guess you can generalise after all.

Carniverous pets are certainly an issue that needs thinking about, but can I make the following points as a prelude to further discussion on this
1. Dogs and cats have to eat meat to survive. Meat eating is therefore part of their nature and so can not be condemned (I know there is vegan pet food available, but my elderly cat refuses to touch it). On the contrary human nature is what ever we want to make it. Certainly a meat free diet is much better for us, which leads me to believe that humans are actually designed to exist on a meat free diet.
2. If humans became vegan but still fed their dogs and cats meat, then there would still be a lot less suffering and a lot less environmental damage.
3. The first chapter of Genesis tells us that before sin entered the world, humans and animals were all vegan. Other religions, especially the Hindu religions have similar stories of a Golden Age. Is it therefore far fetched to believe that the key to a world in which animals and humans live without bloodshed is for humans to set an example and refrain from unecesssary killing. There is a story of a lion rescued from the zoo, who refused to eat meat, and who was raised on a farm with lambs and chickens without hurting them, and even protecting the chickens. Could this be the beginning of the prophecy that the lion will lie down with the lamb?

Dogs don't have to eat meat and you dont have to shoot ducjs... A 27-year-old vegan collie could be world's oldest living dog A border collie said to be 27 could make it into the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest living dog. Bramble's owner Anne Heritage says she's still alert and active and goes for a walk four times a day near her home in Bridgwater, Somerset. The 43-year-old says she feeds her a vegan diet of rice, lentils and organic vegetables. Her partner Roy Franklin takes her swimming once a week at a canine hydrotherapy pool. A Guinness spokesman says the dog could be the oldest living and they are keen to examine any application. The Daily Mail reports Britain's oldest dog was a pedigree papillon called Fred who died at the of 29 in 2000. The world's longest-lived dog was an Australian cattle dog who lived to be just months older than Fred. Ms Heritage says Bramble nearly died last year after injuring her back in a fall, but has become better with the help of the swimming sessions. She said: "She loves exercise and has a real passion for being outdoors. She can be a thorn in my side when she's restless, but it's what keeps her going." also at: www.dogsinthenews.com/issues/0209/articles/020918a.htmMeatless meals for cats and dogs www.peta.org/factsheet/files/FactsheetDisplay.asp?ID=34

Great work by the animal activists! Simply by reading the comments by the hunters, it's easy to see why killing appeals to them - violent words, violent actions. There are so many other ways to enjoy the great outdoors and for men to bond with other men without slaughtering the innocent...but it takes a little imagination to come to that realisation. Fortunately, this outdated blood "sport" is losing popularity - A complete ban on guns will take this off the menu. ;D

Black swans good for eating??? eeeeeeeewwwwww yuck! Good for eating if you are on the point of starvation, even then it's a tough call....
Gimme a nice fat mallard duck roasted for about 3 1/2 hours with the right comination of seasoning.....
As to pulling off a double of black swans on the wing I discern three possibilities 1) The shooter was using a punt-gun loaded with about 20 pounds of grape shot OR 2) The swans were actually ties to a fence at 10 paces or already dead OR 3) An overindulgence in whisky caused hallucinations in the mind of the author.......
Never shoot what you can't eat or feed to your dogs.... and as for swans, why bother? no good to eat, not a pest by any stretch of the imagination and just downright lame if that is the best you can do...

Just a reminder to posters that the use of foul language is frowned upon Aussieseek. It lowers the standard of not only the board but also the offenders. If you really want to use such words try @@#X*** etc. We'll all know what you mean.

If you read that carefully it is pretty obvious that cardigan made it up. They never saw any two swans being shot.

Cardy made something up? ? sheesh go figure...... Shooting season is cracking along nicely in NZ, good weather, some good bags and a lot of responsible shooters not committing heinous crimes with their rabidly dangerous guns..

Andrew, Don't start being critical of our indigenous people, very many of them are hunters and to them (and others) it is an important aspect of their culture.
