You've got to hand it to this Government. At one stroke with the 'Smart Card' they have clipped the wings of the terrorists. Because the card will be foolproof , and there will be no chance of forging it, the terrorists will have to recruit within Australia We know that no citizen, particularly one that had been honoured with a genuine Australian Identity Card, would ever contemplate a terriorist act in his/her own country ;D ;D. If the British had moved faster they could have prevented the London bombings; if only they'd moved quicker those bombers would have been card carrying anti-terrorists. We should all get behind the PM on this. Fusil. Fusil If you think a 'Smart Card' is going to lessen the risk of terrorists entering Australia, think again my friend. It doesn't stop them entering other countries in the World.

The Government sure isn't saying very much about the proposed Smart Card, I guess they don't want to rock the boat too much. The media has been very quiet about it, what's goin' on?

Phil,
I was being a trifle sarcastic.
Seriously, the Aussie people will wake up when it is to late. When we reach the stage where the police can ask for a look at your card whenever they think fit, and can use their power to while away an idle moment or demonstrate that they are doing something.
Fusil.

I realise that now fusil. Won't be long that you'll have to use the card for bank ID then the Govt will be able to look at your bank details. Forget it!!!!!!

What is astounding is that there appears to be little response from the media, unlike back in the mid-80's.

from ABC Online 14-5-06 Commissioner calls for smart card safeguards The Victorian Privacy Commissioner is urging Australians to begin asking some basic questions about the implications of the proposed smart card. The Federal Government is introducing the card, which will become compulsory for anyone accessing Medicare or government welfare services. Commissioner Paul Chadwick has released a checklist for assessing the privacy implications of the card. Among the questions he wants answered are: what information is compulsory on the card and how will it be linked to other databases? Commissioner Chadwick says new technology and new powers for information gathering mean information can be accessed like never before and safeguards must be in place. Stealing stories out of the ABC again Lennie? I bet you dont have permission for that. Smart Cards are a smart idea. the soonert the better.

Nothing astounding about the silence from the media Lennie, they have been given their orders.
Just like the media response to Pauline Hanson compared to the media response to Kim Beasley's xenophobic, racist, anti-foreigner tirade in his budget reply speech. They tear Pauline to shreds but are silent for Big Kimmie.
Just like the media backing of the gun laws. I was unfortunately cursed at the time to be operating a machine in which the radio could only pick up one station and John laws was on that station for three hours every morning. To start with John Laws ridiculed the proposed new gun laws . Then suddenly, from one day to the next, they were the best thing since sliced bread.
You can't tell me he wasn't bought off!
You don't really think the media in Australia is completely independent and free do you?

You're on the button there workingman. I have worked in the Media previously, strangely enough for many years with NZ's second largest daily as a Wine Reporter.
I was never bought off, no never, and nobody ever tried to buy me off, no not ever, you believe me don't you, it really is the truth. LIKE HELL.

Democrats Senator Natasha Stott Despoja says that it looks like the Government has completely underestimated just how big a privacy invasion the smart card idea will be. She also says that the assumption that the card will end as a national ID card is a real threat. read more here: - www.abc.net.au/news/newsitems/200606/s1665252.htm

You can refuse to take part in the upcoming Census.
Why?
The Australian Democrats and other sources have confirmed that the information to be gained in this year's Census may be utilised as a privacy-intrusive measure to build up information profiles about average Australians, like you and me.
Combine this with proposals of a National ID card, and the Howard Government's history of misuse of information (Children Overboard, Iraq invasion justification, AWB scandal etc. etc.) and you have good reason to refuse to hand over your personal information
