Obama to declare victory in nomination race
Barack Obama is set to declare he will be US Democratic presidential nominee, becoming the first African-American to have a chance to capture the White House.
US news network CNN says its projections show that Senator Obama has now secured the delegates he needs to be the Democratic Party's presidential nominee.
Although voting has not quite finished in the second of the last two primaries, Montana, Senator Obama has reached the figure of 2,118 delegates he needs to give him victory over Hillary Clinton.
Senator Obama will make his comments in a speech to supporters in St Paul, Minnesota soon, as the polls close in the final two Democrat primaries in Montana and South Dakota.
"Tonight, I can stand before you and say that I will be the Democratic nominee for president of the United States," he said in remarks released in advance of the victory rally.
"Tonight we mark the end of one historic journey with the beginning of another - a journey that will bring a new and better day to America,"
The polls in South Dakota closed at 11:00am AEST, with Montana to follow at midday.
Senator Clinton is expected to make a speech in New York later today.
