The coal and alternative fuel industries are stepping up their campaign against nuclear power as federal cabinet prepares to discuss the option today.
Senior ministers will announce a wide ranging inquiry to explore the possibility of nuclear power in Australia.
But the coal industry is fighting back, arguing power stations which don't produce greenhouse gases could begin operating in the same time as nuclear power plants.
And Bob Gordon from Renewable Fuels Australia has told 2GB's Alan Jones that Australia should instead examine options such as ethanol.
''We have to harness them, and get them together now,'' he said.
The federal government has rejected Labor's push to include possible nuclear reactor sites in the inquiry.
