Heffernan is a mongrel for making such remarks. Because Julia Gillard
has never had children, she's not fit to run the country, I guess that
says a lot for Heffernan's attitude.
Do we really want people running the
country with Heffernan's attitude

LABOR frontbencher Jenny Macklin today demanded Liberal Senator Bill
Heffernan apologise for saying Labor Deputy Leader Julia Gillard was
unqualified to lead the country because she chose not to have
children.
"The decent thing for Senator Heffernan to do is to apologise and the
Prime Minister should ask him to do that," Ms Macklin said.
"Senator Heffernan's comments are rude and insulting to women. I think
we can behave better than that in Australian politics.
"I'm sure the Prime Minister would not want such a comment made about
Helen Clark, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, or any other woman.
It's just not correct or helpful."
Senator Heffernan raised eyebrows last year when he described the
childless Ms Gillard - who could become deputy PM in a Labor
government - as unqualified to lead the nation because she was barren.
In an interview published in today's Bulletin magazine he stood by
that observation.
"I won't walk away from that," he told the magazine.
"So rude, crude and unattractive as it was ... If you're a leader,
you've got to understand your community.
"One of the great understandings in a community is family, and the
relationship between mum, dads and a bucket of nappies."
But he admitted he was uncouth when he said Ms Gillard had no idea
what life was about because she had no children.
Ms Macklin said she always believed politics was better for having
people from all walks of life.
"I hope that the contribution that any person makes to politics is
judged on its merits and not on whether they have children," she said.
