NSW Police Minister Scully quits
New South Wales Police Minister Carl Scully has resigned after admitting he misled the Parliament for the second time in two weeks. He made the announcement after a discussion with Premier Morris Iemma.
Mr Scully was again forced to apologise in Parliament today for misleading the House over the Cronulla riots. Yesterday, he apologised for denying a report existed and today he had to back down again after accusing the Opposition of lying for saying he had called the ABC about the report.
In a brief press conference at Parliament House, Mr Scully said he made a second error in the House in two weeks today and the community would find it unacceptable. Mr Scully was visibly upset when he announced his decision to the media. "I believe the community would find that unacceptable and difficult to explain," he said. "Following my discussion with the Premier, he and I agreed that it would be difficult to sustain."
Mr Scully is yet to decide if he will remain in the Parliament. He refused to answer questions, only saying he wanted to go home and be with his family.
Mr Iemma is to hold a press conference tonight.

Scully apologises for making misleading statements
New South Wales Police Minister Carl Scully has been forced to apologise to the House for the second time in two days for making misleading statements. Mr Scully's credibility has been under a cloud this week for telling Parliament last week no report into the Cronulla riots existed.
Yesterday he apologised to the House, saying he should have chosen his words more carefully. Today in Question Time he accused Nationals leader Andrew Stoner of lying, after Mr Stoner asked Mr Scully if he had called the ABC nine days ago about a story running on another network that claimed the Government was sitting on the report.
The ABC has released a statement confirming the call. The Minister has now told Parliament while he does not recall the conversation, he cannot deny it. The Opposition Leader, Peter Debnam, has again called for him to go.

Scully sacked after 'one mistake too many': NSW Premier
New South Wales Premier Morris Iemma says he sacked Carl Scully as Police Minister after he made one mistake too many. Mr Scully had to apologise for the second time in two days for misleading the Parliament over the Cronulla riots.
Mr Iemma says he has acted in the interests of maintaining confidence in the NSW Police Force and the State Government. He says Mr Scully accepted the need to leave the senior ministerial role. "The whole world knew that Carl had to be super careful with his choice of words, so I believe I made it was the right call in supporting him then and accepting his apology," he said. "I've got to say that everyone - the whole world knew that he had to be super careful with his choice of words."

After a series of obvious misleading statements by NSW Police Minister Carl Scully, Premier Morris Iemma would have had little choice but to demand he resign from his position. The fact is that it is an outrage when a Police Officer perverts the truth let alone a Police Minister. The other fact is that Carl Scully has proven that his word cannot be trusted therefore he should be relinguished of holding any Parliamentary Roles, and ousted from Politics in disgrace.
