The Bill the Hollywood cartels don’t want you to see
"Sadly, the RIAA/MPAA are actively sponsoring amendments to the 1998 DMCA act to bring it up to date in this new digital age. Interestingly, a penalty mooted in this act, for the simple offense of having only one undocumented copyrighted piece of music on your portable iPod like device, will attract a $1000 fine and 8 years jail time for this criminal felony (Hm, I wonder since the current US President, George Bush Junior showed his iPod for the world to see, there was a track from a Beatles album , which unfortunately is not legally available anywhere at that point in time!).
This link was located via the Boing Boing blog. It shows that our American cousins controlling the audio visual media, are almost trying single handedly to bring down prohibition style copyright laws and restrictions to ensue that only they have absolute control of the media in all forms from A to Z, rootkits inclusive! The way I read this pending legislation proposal, is that it is totally illegal to either backup or alter the format of any audio visual media from it"s original supplied legitimate legal copy!
Thus the conversion of your existing Audio Cd's or DVDs would become illegal, unless you repurchase the same item, in the correct format of your choice! Criminal felony charges more severe than those that apply to any illegal street narcotics dealer, for the possession of one piece of illegal copyright digital file! A felony offense for the mere possession of one audio or video movie on your iPod (or equivalent) and you get an 8 year jail sentence!
Many of you have seen or heard about the new amendment to the DMCA being sent to Congress by the Dep. of Justice. We"ve gotten a copy of the proposed bill and it"s worse than we could have imagined.
This is a concerted effort to escalate Hollywood"s war on America by creating a generation of criminals and sending them off to jail. That"s right: the "Intellectual Property Protection Act of 2006" (IPPA) would double the authorized prison terms for existing copyright infringement, create a host of new offenses, and establish a division within the FBI to hunt down infringers.
The Members of Congress in the pockets of the Hollywood cartels want to divert $20 million a year and FBI agents from fighting real criminals so they can go after people without computers.Read the entire bill here or a summary here. Now is the time to fight back and prevent this from passing. This is the epitome of bad policy, and it"s a direct result of the Hollywood Cartel"s influence in Congress.
The mind truly boggles, getting jailed for a longer term then average street junkie dealer in possession with less than 25 grams or 1 ounce of a controlled substance, or having devices to administer such substances! Let us not forget all signatory countries, post Canada, under the various North American Free Trade Pact - are legally required to post local equivalent laws, as part and parcel of the trade agreement to remain in force! Looks like the age of the overbearing draconian big brother government is coming whether we like it or not, if this law passes, the snowball effect will be a real killer!
Special thanks to DamnedIfIknow, who saw a similar story and brought it to our attention as well.
