Petition to help pensioners posted by aussieseek.proboards25.com/index.c.cgi? While most Australians wait patiently for promised tax cuts, pensioners have become the forgotten people, some doing it so tough they can't afford meat, fish, electricity or even water. These are things the rest of us take for granted. Some pensioners are struggling to survive and have begun begging the Australian Government for more help. Today Tonight has now joined the 1.2 million pensioners looking for a better deal. Isn't it less a question of comparing pension rates to other countries (yes pensioners in Australia are relatively well off) but rather accepting as fundamental that if a member of a civilized society is unable to support themselves due to age or ill health, that a society has a moral responsibility to care for them? And to care for them with sufficient pension payments to ensure for them the standard of living we all expect? Rather than placing them on the poverty line because of circumstances they have no control over whatsoever. Its easy to say "hard luck" now while your able to work and provide a reasonable standard of living for yourself, but remember we all get old one day If all you had to live on was the old age pension, how much a week would you expect?
