Wine sale changes could lead to violence, hearing told
A licensing commission hearing in Alice Springs has been told that licensees fear violence could increase if the sale of cask wine is limited to the last three hours of trade. The commission is seeking feedback on a revised liquor supply plan for Alice Springs.
Under the plan, cask wine products would be limited to two litres, with individuals only being able to purchase one per day between 6:00pm and 9:00pm.
Licensee Paul Venturin representing take away liquor outlets at the three Foodland supermarkets in Alice Springs, told the commission that time of evening was already a security risk.
He said concentrating the hours of availability would force people into drinking as much as they could in a short period, leading to more antisocial behaviour.
Mr Venturin said it would also see a product shift to pre-mixed spirits in cans which had the potential to get people drunk faster.

You know they don't think straight some of these licensing people. Limiting Liquor types to certain hours is stupidity, Paul Venturin is dead right, they'll just drink more of it in that three hours and once thats not available they'll move onto other products with an equal kick and thats will more than likely be the canned spirit mixes.
I guess they could ban it altogether but there again bootlegging of liquor will happen or the drinkers will move closer to the areas with 24 hour licenses which has the potential to worsen the already fragile situation of Aboriginal Alcoholism.
Look at it this way, Prohibition didn't stop people drinking alcohol and the "6 O'Clock Swill' certainly didn't slow them down. The Drug and Alcohol workers in those places deserve a medal.
