Local students to highlight sustainability with Solar Boat Challenge
Fairfield City Council and Telstra have joined forces to sponsor five local high schools to take part in Australia’s International Solar Boat Challenge, which is co-ordinated by Social, Environmental and Economic Sustainability (SEES) Ltd.
The program will see more than 30 NSW schools create a remote control solar boat that they will take to the Penrith’s Sydney International Regatta Centre in September to race against other schools.
Students from Cabramatta High School, Fairfield High School, Freeman Catholic College, PAL College and Saint Johns Park High School took ownership of their solar boat kits on Monday, 31 March at Fairfield City Council.
The Solar Boat Challenge is about taking positive action on sustainability, climate change and the environment.
“Council is excited to be working with the Fairfield Business Education Partnership and these local schools on the International Solar Boat Challenge,” says the Mayor of Fairfield City, Nick Lalich. “Council will also be making our own solar boat and holding a mock competition in the weeks prior to the finals for our local schools as a practise run.”
“Last year, Bossley Park High School made it to the finals which was very exciting. I look forward to seeing one of our local high schools reaching the finals again at the Regatta Centre this year.”
“Building the solar boats will be a lot of fun for the students. The Solar Boat Challenge highlights the need for a proactive approach to sustainability. We must all be conscious of the role we play in the world and how we can positively affect change, especially when it comes to environmental practices,” says the Mayor.
