Putting plans in place to generate local employment
Fairfield City Council adopts Fairfield Employment Lands Strategy
Attracting activities to Fairfield City that will generate local employment is an important goal for Fairfield City Council. To help achieve this goal, Council adopted the Fairfield Employment Lands Strategy (ELS) at its February Council Meeting.
The Strategy has been developed to provide Council with a vision, as well as the appropriate planning framework, to attract employment generating activities and businesses into the City.
Currently, Fairfield City is home to 839.6ha of industrial zoned land with the ELS applying to this land including land zoned General Industrial 4A, Light Industrial 4B and Special Industrial 4C.
Research shows more than 70% of employed residents are employed outside the City, demonstrating a need to increase locally available employment through the development and growth of existing and new industry.
“Council understands the importance of being able to work close to home. The Employment Lands Strategy makes recommendations on what to rezone existing industrial land to encourage growth of employment opportunities,” says the Mayor of Fairfield City, Nick Lalich.
To maximise employment potential in the industrial areas, one of the main objectives of the ELS is the development of two business nodes in Wetherill Park. These nodes will also provide retail and commercial services to the local industrial workforce.
The Strategy also makes recommendations for land that forms part of the Western Sydney Employment Hub which is located directly south of the Sydney Water Pipeline at Horsley Park.
