Labor on back foot over tax
Kevin Meade | October 15, 2007
LABOR was caught on the back foot today when Treasurer Peter Costello unexpectedly released the mid-year budget review and promised $34 billion in tax cuts.
At a press conference in Brisbane late this afternoon, Shadow Treasurer Wayne Swan refused to reveal details of Labor's tax policy and declined to say whether the Opposition would match the tax cuts.
"Now there's been no time for the Opposition to study the mid-year economic review in any detail,'' Mr Swan said.
"Labor will take its time to study the mid-year economic review and the Government's tax package.
"We will take our time to study the detail.''
Asked when Labor would release its tax package, he said: "In good time.''
Mr Swan said Labor believed taxes should be "kept as low as possible, consistent with very good public services and consistent with strict budget discipline''.
