Sotheby's puts $80,000 pricetag on Kimberley Indigenous artworks
A local authority in Western Australia's Kimberley is astonished by the value of two Aboriginal paintings it has had in storage for three decades.
The Shire of Derby-West Kimberley dug the art out of storage for a recent exhibition, unaware of its dramatic increase in value.
The paintings by the late Charlie Numbelmoore of the Kimberley's Mowanjum community were originally obtained by the Shire through an art competition.
But they are now worth at least $80,000 each according to auction house Sotheby's.
The acting manager of the Mowanjum Arts Centre, Mark Norval, says it is a significant find.
"Charlie Numbelmoore has works in the Western Australian museum, he has works in the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, so he's quite a prestigious artist," he said.
"You only find his art in the great collections of the world."
