'Ban the Bomb': Rudd's new pet project?
The government's planned nuclear disarmament commission is so far a lot of talk and no action, the opposition says.
Prime Minister Kevin Rudd yesterday announced Australia would establish a new commission on nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament.
Former Labor foreign affairs minister Garth Evans will co-chair the commission.
Today, Opposition Leader Brendan Nelson said everyone would like to see fewer nuclear weapons in the world.
"Whilst it's obvious that you wouldn't be in any way against it (the commission), I think it's like a lot of things Mr Rudd does, it’s a lot of talk, it’s a lot of hot air, but we don’t expect much action." Will Australia's push for a new nuclear non proliferation treaty help end the scourge of nuclear weapons? Will Australia's new non proliferation treaty put an end to the atom bomb? This only to take attention away from the current position Australia is in. NSW has endured the worst drought in the last 100 years now find this labor Government have cut there Exceptional Circumstances Assistance as from the 15 June, a decision that was made as late as 4pm on Friday 6 June giving farmers a long weekend they will never forget. Pensioners have been ignored in the resent Budget, and the promise to deliver lower prices on Fuel, groceries, interest Rates, and have all failed under this government. Cheap imports are flooding into the country and our debt levels are going through the roof. Our current account debt for the first quarter of this year was $19.5 billion, the worst result since the collapse of the wool boom in 1952. GDP higher then 1986 when Paul Keating said we risked becoming a banana republic. Our current account deficit, our debt to the rest of the world, is at a 56 year record. How long can we continue at this rate. Is there any wonder why the Australian people are begging the opposition to get there house in order and be ready to bail them out. Peter Costello were are you.
